The story is about Hazel and Augustus,
two people diagnosed with cancer who met while meeting in a cancer patients’
support group. Together, they realized the importance of time and they spent
their remaining days meaningfully with each other. The lesson of the story is
that life is short and we should enjoy every second of it. In the story, both
characters are suffering from deadly diseases and no one really knows when they
will die. I learned from it that we should not waste our time here in this
world because we don’t know what will happen in our lives.
Way back in my high school days, I
have this teacher in accounting who was diagnosed with kidney failure. Every
week, he is undergoing dialysis at Marbel which also caused him to have
financial problems. But that didn't stop him from going on with life. He told us many times that if you still can, just live your life to the fullest. Everybody will experience death. No one escapes from it. Having an illness doesn't stop him from praising God. In fact, his faith to Him grew bigger and stronger. He once told me this, "Karmel, if it's your time, it will be your time. Everything happens for a reason. If we don't understand it now, maybe later He'll show us the answers to our questions." I was moved by what he said. How can he accept death that easy? Is he thinking about what would his family feel if he dies? Is he that prepared to leave his wife and daughter? If I were on his shoes, I would probably weep every day and night asking God why of all people, it's me whom he has chosen to suffer with that deadly illness. But look at him. He was a brave man who wholeheartedly accept death and I admire him for that.
I was just curious if what would happen
if the main characters became very depressed with their situations and because
of it they ended their lives? I also would like to know if what would happened
if the main characters become cured of their sickness? Will they be able to
marry each other and be happy with their lives? Will they have many children?
I can predict that in the story, Hazel
will accept the death of Augustus and she will continue living, albeit without
him. However, she will also die after a short while because her disease will
become worse and her body will not be able to keep up with the disease. And
then after her death, their souls would meet again in heaven and there, they
will be together forever – away from the pains that they have suffered in their
past lives.
