The Count of Monte Cristo

The story is about Edmond Dantes, a young and successful merchant sailor who was betrayed during the eve of his wedding. Because of this, he was imprisoned. The rest of the story tells about how he, from the bottom, makes his rise as he plots his revenge to the people who betrayed him. The story focuses on vengeance and how it can affect the lives of the people. In the first part of the story, Edmond Dantes, was a kind person. However, in the later parts, the remnants of his past self can hardly be seen because he has been blinded by his thirst for revenge to the people who did bad things to him. Just like in our life, people chance when they are blinded by the things they want. Many people become tempted by money, fame and fortune. And because of this, some of them even do illegal and unjust things just to get what they want. However, no matter how dark and grim it may be, the story can also be interpreted as a story of hope and second chances. Edmond, being on the verge of suicide during his 6th year of imprisonment, found hope when he met Abbe Faria. Because of him. Edmond found the courage and strength to continue his struggle in life. Just like in our lives, there are certainly a lot of times when we encounter our lowest point and we feel like giving up. However, if we just look around us, we can see that there are people who are just there, willing to help us. There is certainly hope around us. I remember one time when I was on the verge of giving up because there were a lot of requirements that have to be submitted to our teacher in a short span of time and I still haven’t done even one of them. I really wanted to cry during that time but I just prayed and prayed. And it seems like my prayers has been answered because luckily, one of my friends who was already finished his volunteered to help me do my projects and because of his help, I was able to finish and submit them in time. This just shows that no matter what, as long as one believes that there is hope, one will be able to endure countless trials in one’s lives, no matter how small or big that may be. I was just curious why even though the Count of Monte Cristo was rich and famous and he almost have all the things in his life, he still wanted to make his revenge to the people who betrayed him? One thing that also bugged me is that why did Mercedes, Edmond’s fiancé in the start of the story, married Fernand, Edmond’s rival? I can predict that in the story, Valentine and Maximillien will found true happiness. I can see that they will be finally be living the life that they wanted and away from the people who wanted nothing but to cause harm to them. I can feel that they will be happy as a married couple and that they will be blessed with many children. Also, I think that the Count of Monte Cristo together with Haydee, will embark on a new adventure and he will again see happiness in his life. He will finally be able to live his life without seeking for vengeance and I believe he will help countless number of people, just like what he did in the story.
